A program for girls aged 8 to 13 years old
“Wonderfully Made” is a peer mentorship program made to help girls of colour from the ages 8-13.
Through “Wonderfully Made” we want to encourage girls of colour to BELIEVE in themselves, KNOWING that they are beautiful and OFFER girls a space to feel safe and included with their peers.Adrianna Perryman, Youth Advocate Board Member
Wonderfully-Made, a program for girls of color was developed and designed by our youth representative Board Member. As women of colour, we recognize that many young girls grow up with an image of beauty, intelligence and talent contrary to their own identity. This impacts their self-esteem, their self-image, and engagement in resources and supports out of their realm.
The group will be run after school by high school and university students of colour that will mentor the girls in areas such self esteem, leadership, academics and culture. It is important for girls of colour to know who they are and what it means to be a person of colour and teach them to be proud of this.
Wonderfully-Made is designed for girls from the ages of 8-13. We match identified girls with older girls of colour. The aim is to foster positive peer mentorship and sisterhood through a variety of workshops. Another component of our program is developing leadership programs for girls aged 13 to 21. We also aim to hold similar workshops and camps designed for girls within our program. The program is offered FREE and sponsored by Aset Group Consulting and Counselling Services.
Aset Group Consulting and Counselling Services is private practice agency that provides counselling services to children, youth, families and couples. The counselling and programs that are offered are through an inclusive and equitable lens. Aset Group is a provider of Non-Insured Health Benefits program geared towards Indigenous individuals. As well as provides crisis intervention and employee assistance counselling for numerous agencies.
We know through research and data that girls of colour are highly represented in multiple systems such as human trafficking, criminal system, child welfare system, and educational penal system. We are hoping to address these alarming statistics through our community-based program. Through research and data collection, we have learned that these special groups are often underserviced in community and public agencies. Through our programming, we use a cultural, holistic and strength-based approach to supporting youth and families.
