Kusoma Reading Circle

Read. Learn. Explore. Grow.

The Kusoma Reading Circle is an educational and culturally responsive initiative offered by Ifarada: Centre for Excellence to support children and youth in developing literacy, mathematics, STEM, and academic skills while building confidence, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning.

Kusoma provides a welcoming, engaging, and supportive environment where children and youth can strengthen their academic abilities, receive homework assistance, explore new ideas, and develop positive relationships with learning.

Recognizing that every child learns differently, Kusoma incorporates playful, interactive, and age-appropriate activities that make learning enjoyable and accessible. Whether a child already loves reading or needs additional encouragement, the program creates opportunities to explore books, strengthen comprehension, develop problem-solving skills, and celebrate individual achievements.

An important component of Kusoma is cultural representation and identity affirmation. Through books written by Black and racialized authors, stories featuring diverse characters, and opportunities to engage with community professionals and guest authors, children are encouraged to see themselves reflected in literature, recognize their potential, and develop pride in their cultural identities.

When sufficient interest exists, Ifarada organizes a structured Reading Circle where children come together to explore stories, participate in creative activities, discuss important themes, and develop friendships through shared learning experiences.

Program Goals

  • Academic Achievement: Support children and youth in strengthening their academic skills, completing homework, achieving educational goals, and developing confidence in school.
  • Literacy Development: Improve reading fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, writing, storytelling, and communication skills through engaging activities.
  • Mathematics and STEM: Introduce mathematics, science, technology, and problem-solving concepts through creative, hands-on learning experiences.
  • Cultural Identity and Representation: Celebrate Black and racialized authors, professionals, and diverse stories that promote cultural pride, positive self-identity, and a sense of belonging.

By integrating educational activities with cultural learning, emotional expression, and positive peer relationships, Kusoma aims to help children develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

Every child deserves the opportunity to discover the joy of learning, recognize their strengths, and see the possibilities for their future
